Prowess with both bat and ball earned Downham Town A’s Ian Simmonds a place on the five-man shortlist for the Dipple & Conway Opticians Norfolk Cricket Alliance’s July Player of the Month competition.

Playing in Division Three, Simmonds scored 70 in the home win against Sprowston and 56 in the away victory over Mundford. At home to Hardingham he plundered 4-17 to help his side to another success.

However, the award was won by Bradenham’s Will Dewing who was the scourge of Division Two batsmen as he took 19 wickets for a miserly 138 runs during July.

Damian Conway, a director of Swaffham, Norwich and Diss-based independent opticians Dipple & Conway, commented: “What impressed Dipple & Conway above all is the success enjoyed this month by home-grown youth talent. With ambassadors like them, the game looks to have a healthy future in this great county.

“Dipple & Conway is keen to encourage excellence among Norfolk’s younger players.”
