First mini tournament of year serves up success

KES Community Sports Centre hosted the first indoor tennis tournament for 8 and Unders of 2015.

More than 30 children from West and North Norfolk took part with youngsters from Fakenham, Burnham Market and KES well represented.

This was the first time that an indoor tournament of this size has been hosted in the county outside of Norwich.

It was a long day with the children split into five pools, and the winners and best runners-up going onto a knockout stage. The eventual winner was Annie Bastian from KES who defeated Albert Williams in the final, both having got to the final winning all their matches.

Manager of the Tennis Centre Jeremy Hodges said: “All the children played a high standard of tennis throughout the day and it was great to see the high standard of sportsmanship from everyone.

“It was great to see so many children keen to take part.”

For some of these children it was their first taste of tournament tennis and they all worked really hard to get their first win. Some of the children who came from Fakenham and Burnham Market are coached by Becky Palmer and both clubs are now developing a strong year-round coaching programme.

It is hoped that the next event will take place in the Easter holiday and the KES team are hoping to increase the entrants to 40 next time around.

A massive thank you to all the parents for their support on the day and a huge thank you to Ashley Swift, Hannah Hodges, Ben Charnley and Kaci Woods for umpiring all the matches.
