The Downham Town Sports Federation’s R.H. Firmage Award was awarded, this year, to Andrew Hodges.

Hodges has been a major part of the squash set up in Downham for over 25 years. He was a leading member of the Squash Club for whom he played in the county leagues, and won the club Handicap Tournament in 1989 and 1990.

Since the club was disbanded through lack of support, Hodges has taken on the administration and upkeep of the squash courts enabling the sport to continue. He has, single-handedly, been responsible for the running of the courts, maintaining the floors and organising the refurbishing of the walls and replacement flooring.

Without his efforts it is likely that there would be no squash at all played in Downham. Other worthy nominees were: Ashleigh Corbett from the cricket club, Sandra Calvert from DTFC, and Jane Ashby of Ryston Runners AC.
