The 2016 banger racing season kicks off in style at Lynn’s Adrian Flux Arena this weekend with the 23rd running of the British Team Championship for Unlimited Bangers.

This is better known to many as Icebreaker XXIII.

Racing begins at noon on Sunday with more than 100 Unlimited Bangers expected to race, ably backed-up by a full field of Junior Bangers.

The Icebreaker attracts entries from across the country, providing tough opposition for the local teams.

But the defending champions are Norfolk-based Team Bash, led by Lynn’s Darren Fendley, the current Two-
Litre Banger World Champion.

Fendley won the final at last year’s event to clinch the crown for his team against an onslaught from the nationally renowned Grey & Black squad.

That provided a springboard to the most successful season of the 30-year-old paint sprayer’s career as he also added the national points title to his world championship triumph.

Local favourites the Predators have entered two four-man squads, headed by Ricky Twell. The current White & Yellow Grade Series champion is better known for his on-track crashing than scoring race wins.

He will be ably backed-up in the team’s battle with the Wisbech-based Gypsy Crew by livewire brothers Luke and Joel Allen, plus Lynn teenager Kieran Bowman and the experienced Shaun Cooper.

The Junior Banger entry includes Lynn drivers John Klyn and Harry Cobb. Klyn has won races in each of the last two meetings and will aim to continue that streak.

Cobb is making his debut in the under 16s formula that is the breeding ground for drivers who will be taking part in the main event in years to come.
