King’s Lynn Fury have announced the signing of Norfolk Lad David Wood, who stands an imposing 6ft 9 and will be sure to be a big hit with local fans.
Wood started playing basketball at the age of 11 when his form tutor at school got him into the sport.
David has played all his Norfolk games for only one club, the Wildcats based in Poringland. He arrived there in 2008 as a rather fragile 18 year old. 8 years on he has now completed his 3rd year as player-coach with the Wildcats.
David tasted his first national competition in the 2014/15 season at the age of 24 when he played for the UEA in the founders cup playing under former Fury Youth Coach Diccon Lloyd-Smeath. The UEA managed to reach the quarter finals that season narrowly losing to the eventual winners. The experience has made David hungry for more success at national level.
David is a huge supporter of basketball in Norfolk and big personality, and looks to promote the sport anyway he can. He is currently studying for a Foundation Degree in Sport, Health and Exercise. As well as coaching Wildcats he also coaches the City College Norwich team.
David said on joining Fury: “I’m really excited about the prospect of turning pro, Fury have a fantastic fan base and are one of the best supported clubs outside of Division 1. The club has a number of exciting young talented players and their enthusiasm for the game is contagious. I will be playing my first National League game at 26, which I guess is quite old to make a debut! However, I’m confident with the players we have and under James’ leadership we will make this season a successful season.”
