Sprowston 211 all out beat Downham Town 189 all out by 22 runs

Downham started their final league game of the season positively, taking three Sprowston wickets for 22 runs, but their long tail let them down.

Sam Sharp removed Sutton with the help of a steepling catch from Duncan Lanchester and Dalton well caught at cover by Pat Yates. In between that Addam Todd clean bowled Ollerton. Joss Stuart then had Hales caught by Tom Tansley to leave Sprowston struggling at 57 for 4.

Purton, who had been dropped early in his innings, and Hanby then took advantage of some slack bowling to put on 123 with some hard hit boundaries.

Sprowston were in the driving seat going into the last 10 overs at 180 for 4.

The Sharp brothers then bowled Town back into the game with Chris grabbing four wickets with a fine spell of spin bowling and Walter took his third wicket, that of Purton for 86, caught by Nick Kelly.

Town also lost early wickets with Stuart and Tansley both out before the score reached 20. Kelly hit a quick-fire 22 before skying a short ball from Hanby to be caught by the bowler. Yates and Lanchester then consolidated to get Town back into the game.

Lanchester was well caught at slip by Dalton to bring in Todd. Todd and Yates then took the attack to Sprowston with Todd in particular playing some lovely shots. At 165 for 3 in the 37th over the game was heading to a tight finish.

Yates (40) was controversially given out and proved the turning point in the game. Todd hit a classy 57 but Town’s long tail was unable to support him and go on to reach their target.

They were bowled out for 189 in the 48th over to complete a disappointing season, finishing in fifth place.

Town have a last chance of silverware when they take on Hethersett and Tas Valley in the Bernard Matthews Knockout Cup on September 13 at Sprowston CC.
