An amazing technical session took place at Happidojo Judo Club in Marham.
The club had asked Steve Gawthorpe (7th Dan) to come and be guest coach at the club, as a personal thank you, in recognition for the hours he has devoted to judo throughout his life.
Gawthorpe is a former Olympian, coming fifth at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984. Also that year Gawthorpe was a bronze European medallist in Liege; and in 1985 he was a bronze World medallist in Seoul. He is renowned for his skills and expertise in Newaza (groundwork).
The session was used to coincide with Gawthorpe’s retirement from The British Judo Association; and also in attendance were Dave Horton-Jones (7th Dan) and Dave Southby (6th Dan), along with other Dan, Kyu and Mon grades.
Colin McCallum (2nd Dan and coach of Happidojo Marham) commented: “Steve is so well respected, and has such great knowledge to tap into. He never gets complacent, and is constantly adapting and trying out new variations on the ground. You always learn something new off him, and the children think he is fantastic.”
