Pelicans Men 1st XI 5 Ford 2
Pelicans began 2015 with a win against Dagenham-based Ford at Lynnsport on Saturday.
A hat-trick from Gavin Johnstone powered his team up to fourth in the table.
The scoreline didn’t best reflect the game though as Ford started the better and put a lot of pressure on the Pelicans goal, earning early short corners.
Aldous stood firm though along with his backline of Major, Page and captain Nick Henry who made his return to first XI hockey this season after injury.
Pelican began to get a foothold in the match and this was down to their midfield who covered a lot of ground throughout the match.
Johnstone and Frost provided width and with it a lot of skill while the central midfielders of Walpole, Picton and Sheerin broke up a lot of Ford attacks and set ones up for the Pelicans strike force of Lankfer and Simons.
The front two combined to open the scoring after good skill from Johnstone; he found Simons whose pass the deflected in by Lankfer.
Ford continued to press though and on one of their counter attacks did manage to equalise.
The second half followed the same dynamics as the first but Pelicans were more clinical than their visitors, and this was proven as Simons gave his side the lead again from a penalty corner.
The third goal was a sensationally worked team goal which started in the left back position with Allsop and involved the whole of the midfield before Johnstone beat two defenders before squaring to Simons who returned the favour for Johnstone to score from close range.
Johnstone then scored from a short corner after having the ball slipped to him by Page, before then completing his hat-trick after being set up by Frost & Lankfer.
Despite being clear Ford continued to attack and had chances to get themselves back in the game but were wasteful in front of goal, before eventually pulling one back from close range.
There was still time for Allsop to perform a spectacular goal line clearance as Pelicans closed out the game.
Next weekend they entertain Crostyx looking to make it six games without defeat.
