West Norfolk Junior Badminton’s Joe Rolfe was the sole West Norfolk trophy winner at the Under 17 Norfolk restricted tournament held in Norwich.
Rolfe (14, pictured) was runner-up in the boys’ doubles, with his Norwich partner James Salter.
Daniel Hughes of Downham, with Norwich’s Aidan Parfitt, won an exciting last group match against Ben Watts and Sean Lott 21-19, to earn a place against Rolfe and Salter in the semi-final, guaranteeing West representation in the final. The latter pair came through easily 21-10, however they were unlucky to face the top seeds in the final, losing 21-14.
Jacob White, Sam Thorpe and Albert Smith all won a group game, and losing a close second. Watts just missed out on the knockout rounds, after winning two group games. Lott, Hughes and Rolfe all won their groups to reach the quarter-finals. Hughes beat Lott, and Rolfe also won his match to reach the semi, both playing up an age group.
In the girls’ competition, 12-year-old Jessica Bateman nearly caused an upset against much older opposition in the singles event, losing out on the semis on count-back.
In the doubles, Bateman and Jessica Alder with their respective partners, both narrowly missed out on the knockout stages, after losing one game each.
In the mixed event, Watts, with Norwich’s Kate Sawyer, was the most successful West player; winning their initial group to reach the semi-final, where they lost to the eventual champions.
