West Norfolk Colts 5

Colchester Colts 34

This was the penultimate match in the Eastern Counties Cup pool games and on paper the toughest as West entertained the current champions.

The first half started with early pressure from the visitors which was well defended initially by West but with one missed tackle Colchester pounced to open the scoring out wide.

West responded well with some strong forward pressure which created an overlap in the back line which was turned into points with a sublime step inside the desperate Colchester defence by Toby Vernon-Wood, 5-5.

At this point West looked as if they could contain Colchester’s attacks and threaten with some good counter attacks. Unfortunately they fell foul of a classic scrum half faint pass and darting run to let Colchester in for their second score under the posts, 5-12. The visitors’ lead was increased when a clearing kick was sliced, resulting in a try.

West came out for the second half looking a bit sluggish and it was not long before they were punished as Colchester took advantage of a gaping hole in West’s defence 5-24. West started to tire and began to miss tackles which allowed Colchester to run in two more tries. West performed well in patches and just need a bit more consistency.
