A representative of West Norfolk Rugby Club, John Lunnun, had been invited to visit Vilnius Rugby Club and Academy.
On arrival, John and his interpreters, Gintaras Simankis and Laurynas Ratkelis, who both live and work in Lynn (Gintaras plays for West Norfolk Black Knights rugby league side), were met by driver and rugby player, Dominikyas Klevinskas and whisked to a local hotel for the club’s end of season presentation and Christmas party; they were treated to an evening of tremendous hospitality.
The next morning, the visitors met with Vidmantras Valys, club coach and main benefactor of the club (which has no clubhouse and just one pitch in the middle of the woods outside Vilnius town). Valys accompanied the party on visits to three children’s homes in the area; children are transported every weekend to the club for coaching.
Following on from previous donations of kit from West Norfolk over the past six months, John and the team distributed 250 shirts that had been donated via Darren and Michelle Gallagher, parents of West Youth player, Bradley.
Four coaches from Vilnius will be visiting West Norfolk in March, to see how the club runs.
It is hoped that they will also be able to observe the Leicester Tigers’ youth coaching for this area which takes place on a Monday evening at West and hopefully to make contact with Tigers’ main club re: senior rugby.
Support for the club and children’s homes continues; currently there is a collection for any children’s items like toys and clothing.
Any donations can be dropped at West Norfolk’s club shop in Gatehouse Lane, North Wootton on a Sunday morning between 10am and 1pm.
