Several younger West Norfolk junior badminton members entered the recent Norfolk under 13 championships in Norwich.
The largest entry was in the boys’ singles with Harry Wakefield, Luc Widdowson, Max Smith and Alfie Cator among the 18 competitors.
Regular county players, Harry (10) and Luc (11) won their respective groups to progress to the knockout rounds, however Max and Alfie did extremely well to win games against much more experienced players in their groups, as well as in the plate event.
Harry and Luc then won their respective quarter-finals, to face each other in the semis. Harry eventually won a close match to reach the final, where he lost to the top seed, Louis Davis from Norwich, 15-10, 15-8. Luc won the third/fourth place play-off match.
In the girls’ singles, Willow Taylor (12) from Methwold came third in her group, but then won the plate competition, defeating two county players on the way.
Willow and Elianna Dockerty from Ashwicken paired up in the girls’ doubles, causing an upset against several experienced county players to finish runners-up. This was after winning an incredibly close match 16-14 in the third end of their second/third place decider.
In the boys’ doubles, Harry and his partner Louis, and Luc with Vikash Kumar both won their respective groups, followed by their semi-finals, to face each other in the final. It was an exciting match, but Harry and Louis were victorious, 15-12, 15-11.
The final event of the day was the mixed doubles, with Luc and partner Jasmine Hudson finishing third. But in probably the closest match of the whole tournament, Harry, with Izzy Sellors, finished runners-up to Louis and Charlotte Pollard from Norwich 7-15, 18-16, 10-15.
