Have your say

West Norfolk Ladies played host to Thetford Meerkats at Gatehouse Lane, the first ladies team fixture in the club in more than seven years.

West fielded a new and exciting team led by captain Rachel Wade and coached by Teresa Ford-Dunn and Neil Langley.

Only 13 players were available due to injury out of a training squad of 19.

Over half of the team were new to the game prior to this fixture but it didn’t show with the team securing a 96-0 victory over the equally newly-formed and great spirited Meerkats.

Strong forward play led by Watson, Moats and Gedge enabled quick ball to be produced time and time again setting up good ball for Wade, debuting at 9, to offer to a strong back line.

The West pack were outplayed by a very strong Thetford pack but quick thinking of Murphy and Williams soon turned lost ball into attacking ball, aiding Wadlow to run some great attacking lines, knowing Georgie Lingham had the strength and skill to power over the try line on more than five occasions.

On the other wing was sister of Georgie, Rosie, who had not played rugby before – but was a natural.

Following an injury to a key player Watson, who left the field on a stretcher, Mahoney was warmly welcomed and made a valuable contribution in the second half.

All the team put on an exciting performance in front of a packed clubhouse. The girls look forward to the return fixture playing Thetford on April 3.

West Norfolk are also holding a super 10’s rugby tournament and beer festival from April 29-May 1 and would welcome your support.

The team are always looking for new players and train Wednesday evenings at Gatehouse Lane from 7-8.30pm.

Players of the match: Georgie Lingham and Jess Walker.
