Lynn rider makes history by winning British Motocross Championship round on home soil
Lynn’s Calum Mitchell has written his name into the Norfolk sporting history books by becoming the first rider from the county to win a British Motocross Championship round on home soil.
And for the 24-year-old race ace, victory meant more than just silverware; it was a triumph powered by family, emotion, and a newfound sense of joy in the sport he loves.
Just weeks after the birth of his first son, Arthur, Mitchell delivered the performance of his life in front of a raucous local crowd at Lyng.
Riding for Worx Scaffolding-backed Total Triumph team, he stormed to a dominant win in the opening race.
The story of the day was one of pride, passion, and personal redemption after suffering some bad luck throughout the season.
“It’s been a special few weeks,” admitted Mitchell.
“Becoming a dad has just given me that extra bit of drive. I wanted to do it for my little boy, my family, and everyone who's stuck by me.
“To win here, in front of my people, with my little boy waiting at home, it doesn’t get better than that.”
In the first lap of qualifying, Mitchell came out firing to set the second-fastest time.
When the gates dropped for the opening race, he exploded out of the start to seize the holeshot, sending the home fans into a frenzy. From there, he was unstoppable.
He extended his lead to two seconds by the end of the opening lap and never looked back, crossing the line seven seconds clear of Spanish Grand Prix ace Oriol Oliver.
“The crowd was unreal,” he said.
“Hearing those cheers every lap, that’s something I’ll never forget. It felt like they were pushing me around.”
The second race was a real war of attrition.
Mitchell again launched off the line to grab the holeshot before becoming embroiled in a breathtaking three-way scrap for the lead. For three laps, the trio traded blows, swapping lines and throwing everything at each other.
Oliver eventually edged ahead, but Mitchell refused to down tools, finishing level on points and securing second overall on countback.
Mitchell was quick to share his British Championship race success with those who helped him get there.
“I can’t thank Worx Scaffolding Total Triumph enough for having me on the team this year and bringing back the enjoyment of racing,” he said.
“And huge thanks to my sponsors: Harris Road Contractors, Fabrican Engineering, Stebbings Car Superstore, Whyt Tile, Norfolk Blueprint Construction, LB Landscapes, and MPH for all their support, past and present.
"Let’s hope we’ve got a few more wins in us next season."
Mitchell, who is also part of the Young Stars Speedway set-up, will now let the dust settle before planning for next season.
"Right now, my future is uncertain," he said.
"I have an idea what it could hold, but now it’s time to rest and recover, spend time with my boy and soak it all in.
"Once I’m ready to sign the papers, I will announce on social media what my plans are.
"After a career win, it’s hard not to plan for 2026 already. With the right people, it will work out."
