New King's Lynn Town signing deserves his chance, says former boss
King’s Lynn Town’s newest signing has earned the right to play at the top level of non-league football, according to his former manager.
Winger Michael Gyasi could make his Linnets debut against Notts County on Boxing Day, having joined from St Ives Town this week.
And Saints boss Ricky Marheineke believes the 20-year-old is a completely different prospect to the one he brought to the Step 3 outfit before the start of this season.
Marheineke said: “The boy has been brilliant for us this season and we were never going to stand in his way of playing higher.
“King’s Lynn is a fabulous club and it’s an opportunity Michael couldn’t turn down. We waived the approach as soon as it came through.
“That’s why we never put any of our younger players on contract as we are always happy for them to try to better themselves.
“He has earned the chance of a crack with a club like King’s Lynn. He is a different player to the one who walked through our door in August.”
Gyasi, a former Chelsea and Leicester City academy player, scored five goals in 10 appearances for St Ives.
Marheineke said: “Before we signed him, I’d followed him for a couple of seasons and up until this season he had never been settled.
“He was very, very raw. All he needed was an arm around him and a platform to play on.
“He’s aggressive, has pace, can be direct and can be very unpredictable at times. If there’s something he’s added this season then it’s his end product.
“There are a lot of areas he needs to improve on but you’d expect that with any player moving up a couple of levels.
“He’s gone from playing against Redditch and Grantham to playing the likes of Notts County.
“He’s gone from not playing at Step 4 to signing for a Step 1 club in the space of six months which is an incredible achievement.
“We are all so pleased for him and he goes with our blessing.”
