More news, no ads

Fakenham Racecourses hosts its first meeting of the 2021/22 National Hunt Season this afternoon with a competitive six-race card at the track.

The action gets underway at 1.38pm and culminates at 4.33pm. The going at the track is currently good with watering taking place.

There are scattered showers forecast for today and we have previewed the action with our race-by-race guide.

1.38pm Maiden Hurdle (2m 4f)

This looks a battle between Italian Spirit and Loved Out.

The Evan Williams-trained Loved Out shaped with plenty of promise at Newton Abbot on his first start for new connections and looks sure to go close. However, preference is for Italian Spirit.

The five-year-old scored in a bumper at Newton Abbot last year and ran well when fourth at Newbury on his first run over hurdles last season.

He remains open to plenty of improvement and gets the vote.

Selection: Italian Spirit

2.13pm Novices’ Hurdle (2m)

Auditoria is thoroughly unexposed and warrants respect. However, this is all about Howdyalikemenow.

The five-year-old impressed on his first start for connections when scoring by 14 lengths at Stratford earlier this month and he looks open to tons of improvement.

Selection: Howdyalikemenow

2.48pm Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (3m)

All four runners have a chance here, including top-weight The Golden Rebel who was fourth at Worcester last time out, but remains open to more progression, whilst Lord Schnapps could also build on a fourth at Plumpton.

Eaglehill is another possible improver having won twice last term. However, Go Millie Go gets the vote on her chase debut.

She filled the placings in a couple of Listed events last term and looks to have the size and scope to improve
over fences.

Selection: Go Millie Go.

3.23pm Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (2m 4f)

Jumping Cats bounced back to form in good style last time out and has to be respected.

However, Midnight Jewel gets the vote.

The five-year-old has won three of his last four starts and he has impressed at Fontwell and Huntingdon on his last two runs.

He will have to defy a 7lb penalty for this event, but he is taken to score again.

Selection: Midnight Jewel

3.58pm Handicap Chase (3m)

Larry and Minella Encore both look to be on retrieval missions and they look best watched, whilst course and distance winner Rocky’s Treasure is undoubtedly the class horse in the race.

However, he lost his way last term and was pulled-up on his most recent start.

With that in mind, preference is for Canyon City who has scored at the court before and is taken to improve on a below-par effort at Worcester earlier this month.

Selection: Canyon City

4.33pm Handicap Hurdle (2m 4f)

Welland is a fascinating runner returning from a 290 day lay-off having scored at the course in the past. Cremant is another type who is capable of further improvement, but Soldier On Parade has been posting a number of good efforts in defeats this term and a reproduction of his second at Sedgefield last time out makes him of serious interest in the finale.

Selection: Soldier On Parade.
