Swaffham Town look to maintain winning start in Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division
Swaffham Town will be wary of a Norwich United backlash when they host the Planters at Shoemakers Lane this evening.
The Pedlars go into the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division clash defending a 100 per cent record after winning their opening two league games of the campaign.
Tonight’s visitors suffered a surprise FA Cup exit to March Town United at the weekend and will be looking to bounce back at the first attempt.
Swaffham Town manager Paul Hunt, who has a number of injury concerns going into the game, said: “Norwich United will definitely be out to get a result, but our motivation is to keep doing well in the league.”
The Pedlars have signed utility player Sam Garner, who spent a brief spell with Downham Town last season, from Dereham Town.
“Sam spent part of pre-season with Dereham and ourselves,” explained Hunt.
“He can play in a number of positions, which is a help as we don’t run with a massive squad here.”
Swaffham Town went down to a 78th-minute winner at Biggleswade United in an FA Cup tie which was spoilt by the high winds.
“The wind was horrendous for the whole game,” said Hunt.
“Both sides tried to play football and mix it up, but the wind even hampered both sides trying to play it on the floor.
“We created some really good chances, especially in the last few minutes, but couldn’t find that extra little bit of quality in the box when we needed it.
“Our back four were absolutely magnificent on the day playing in some very difficult conditions.
“It was a game that could have gone either way and Biggleswade are a really friendly club. They are very similar to ourselves and have asked us for a pre-season friendly next year.”
In Division One North of the Thurlow Nunn League, a Joseph Taylor goal earned King’s Lynn Town Reserves a share of the spoils in their opening league game of the season at Cornard United.
Tonight sees the first West Norfolk derby game of the season when Fakenham Town host Downham Town at Clipbush Park.
Meanwhile, Swaffham Town Reserves open their Hadley and Ottaway Division Two season away to Hingham tonight before travelling to Buxton on Saturday.
It has been a promising pre-season for Swaffham under-18s, who host Lakenheath on Thursday, after Thomas Wagg scored the only goal of the match in a 1-0 victory over Ely City last week.
