Diss 36 West Norfolk 29

West Norfolk took away lots of positives from a hotly-contested fixture despite suffering their fifth consecutive London NE2 league defeat.

The Gatehouse Lane outfit returned home with two losing bonus points as the two Norfolk-based sides faced each other for the first time in a number of years.

Head coach Aaron Beaumont commented: “It was a great end to end game for the neutral. The guys worked really hard, especially in attack, today and showed some good phases of play, breaking Diss down on a number of occasions.

“We also showed a lot of patience and were able to finish most of our opportunities once we had earned them.

“However we still need to work on our finishing, especially with handling and running from depth but once again there were lots of positives to take away from the game this week.”

Beaumont added: “The set piece was a big positive, winning all our own scrums and taking four against the head whilst our line-out operated efficiently.

“We let ourselves down by switching off at key moments, allowing Diss to get themselves back in the game after we had got level or ahead.

“We are becoming much more consistent as a team and just need to work on the finer details which will get us the win we deserve.”

After conceding early, sustained pressure through carries from Dan Nunn and Henry Rust would position West inside the Diss 22.

Some quick thinking from centre Jack Wicks saw Lewis Stewart go over for West’s opening score.

Although Diss added a further two scores, Sam Moses kicked a penalty as Diss held a 15-8 lead at the interval.

The visitors started the second half brightly with some wonderful link-up play between centres Wicks and Angus Williams, who would release Jack Windass and Alex Barwick on a number of occasions.

Moses sent full-back Charlie Moore clear to score under the posts before converting the resulting kick.

Soon after, the front row of Nunn, Rust and Paul Bridges used quick hands to put Jack Windass away in the corner, superbly converted by Moses.

Unfortunately, West were unable to hold on to their lead for long as Diss registered two converted tries in quick succession.

West’s Dan Stephenson then won the ball at the line-out and Moses sent Barwick clear in a training ground move to score in the corner.

After giving themselves a glimmer of hope, the Diss captain powered over for a converted try as the hosts restored their seven-point advantage.

Adrian Flux Man of the Match was Connor Clarke.

Tomorrow, West Norfolk return to Gatehouse Lane where they take on bottom side South Woodham Ferrers (3pm). West Norfolk Development, who lost 52-34 to Medics, host Holt tomorrow (3pm).
