Rising athletics star Alfie Williams has been selected to represent England at his first-ever International event.

The West Norfolk Athletic Club member, from Downham, has been picked for the shot put at the U18 Youth Nations Cup, which takes place this weekend in Dublin.

Reflecting on his achievement, a delighted Williams said: “This year I wanted to do well in my GCSEs and in my sport. I knew it would not be easy.

“I had always dreamed of earning my first England vest and now it’s really happening.

“I’m so pleased to be given this fantastic opportunity and I will do my best to bring back a medal.

“Thanks to my family and friends, West Norfolk Athletic Club, my coaches, my school at Downham Academy and to England Athletics for their belief in me.”

He has worked tremendously hard this year in the shot, under the guidance of coaches Stuart Carlaw, Allan Williams and Marianne Oakley.

The training programme was stepped up at the back end of last year, and it has really paid off. This year started well, as Williams scooped indoor County and Eastern Regional titles.

The youngster followed it up by winning a national bronze medal at the UK Indoor age group Championships in Sheffield in February.

Williams began a hectic outdoor season competing for West Norfolk and higher-claim second club Northampton AC regularly.

Despite the demands, Williams kept on winning in the various league matches.

His main focus was making the prestigious England Schools Championships at Birmingham – and he didn’t disappoint.

Williams bagged gold at the Outdoor Norfolk County and Norfolk County Schools Champs on the way to a fabulously hard-fought bronze medal at England Schools Championships.

Despite coming up against a high-quality field in Birmingham, Williams threw a personal best and county and club record of 15.12m.

The youngster just missed out on automatic selection for the International Schools event that day by finishing just outside the top two.

However, in light of his recent good form and top-UK ranking it did put him in the frame for selection for the Youth Nations Cup.

Williams received a call last week by the selectors and was confirmed at the weekend as part of the England team along with Northampton training partner Chris Dymishri and their lead coach Stuart Carlaw.

The shot competition takes place tomorrow at 3pm.
