King's Lynn Town lose at Weymouth in the National League

Weymouth 2 King's Lynn Town 1

Ten-man King's Lynn Town suffered their successive National League defeat as they were made to pay the penalty at the Bob Lucas Stadium this afternoon.

Striker Adam Marriott, who had cancelled out Cody Cooke's first-half opener early in the second period, saw his spot-kick saved before Tom Whealan converted a penalty to win the game for the hosts five minutes from time.

But it only told half the story after Rory McAuley had a rush of blood to the head and saw himself sent-off on the south coast.

Lynn, who made three changes to their starting eleven in Dorset dominate possession in a first half which saw few chances for either side.

Despite enjoying plenty of the ball, King's Lynn Town failed to muster a single shot on target in the first half.

And it was the Terras who delivered a real sucker punch by taking the lead seven minutes before the interval.

A cross from Oliver Harfield could only be parried by Lynn goalkeeper Archie Mair into the path of Cody Cooke to sidefoot the ball home.

Lynn needed an immediate response and it arrived seven minutes after the restart as Michael Clunan's cross was stabbed home by Marriott.

The Walks outfit were in the ascendancy and were handed a golden chance to take all three points after they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Marriott 16 minutes from time.

But Jack Bycroft brilliantly saved the striker's well-hit effort to his right to deny the visitors from taking the lead.

Weymouth went straight up the other end and hit the post through Sean Shields before the game was turned on its head by McAuley's silly sending-off.

McAuley - already on a yellow card - felt aggrieved at not being awarded a penalty and had a coming together with Brennan Camp and the referee was left with very little option other than to show him another yellow card.

Lynn made a triple changes – Sonny Carey on for Marriott, Simon Power for Cameron King and Ross Barrows for Ryan Jarvis.

But things went from bad to worse when Barrows, who had only been on the field for a few seconds, handled in the box, and the Terras were awarded a penalty of their own as the clock ticked down.

Tom Whealan stepped up to convert the resulting penalty kick to hand Weymouth, who had failed to score before the start of the afternoon, their first three points of the campaign.

The Linnets, who have slipped into the bottom three as a result of this defeat, will be left kicking themselves for at least not bringing home a point and it doesn't get any easier with the visit of Notts County in the FA Cup next weekend.
