Ryston Runners well represented at Wissey Half Marathon
The Wissey Half Marathon, organised annually the first weekend in September by Ryston Runners AC, was “under new management” this year with Jeremy Navrady taking over as race director from Martin Ive.
Ive himself took the opportunity to run in the race and was placed third in the M50 category in 94.33, commenting that running in it was far easier than organising it.
At the sharp end a new course record was set by past Ryston member Danny Rock, now with Felixstowe Road Runners, with a three-minute personal best (PB) time of 71.04.
The 30 members of the home club who competed also took their fair share of category honours and set some useful PB times.
Les Scott won the M60 category in 97.05 while second places in their respective categories went to Dickie Ebbs (M45/78.04, just 16 seconds behind top spot and seventh overall), Lesley Robins (W45/99.42), and Jane Ashby (W65/2.01.26, just a minute adrift of first place).
Ben Foxwell, while not recording a PB, ran the course 18 minutes faster than last year and passed the 10k mark in a PB time for that distance, finishing 28th in 88.25.
Mark Fountain clocked a PB of 98.16 for 77th place overall.
Other Ryston times/places (chip/gun): 11 Dan Guppy SM 82.26, 14 Warren Armstrong M45 83.31, 17 Gavin Reynolds SM 85.03, 41 Kevin Farquhar SM 91.19, 42 Will Honeybone M45 91.32, 47 Bailey Took JM 92.47, 52 Dan Pratt M40 93.59, 86 Malcolm Tuff M50 99.42, 89 Matt Hitchcock SM 99.06, 100 Darren Smith SM 1.41.07, 109 Jamie Bransgrove SM 1.42.19, 117 Hayley Hawes W35 (4th) 1.44.23, 118 Jonathan Hawes M40 1.44.23, 128 Owen Jary M45 1.45.35, 148 Anna Smith W40 1.48.24, 156 Christian Pick SM 1.49.26, 170 Kevin Took SM 1.51.07, 187 Barry Smith M50 1.54.24, 199 Nathan Elsegood SM 1.55.22, 209 Natasha French W35 1.56.53, 239 Keith Morris M55 2.02.22, 267 Jacqui Scott W45 2.09.34, 286 Martin Hammond M50 2.13.37.
Meanwhile, five young Ryston athletes took part in the England Athletics National Championships at Bedford.
On Saturday, in the U17M category, Robert MacQueen ran in the 400m, finishing in 54.33 secs.
Charlie Wakefield competed in the 800m heats and clinched third with a PB of 1.57.42 seeing him through to the final, in which he placed seventh with 1.57.74.
On the Sunday, Lucy Oakley threw 11m 35 in the U15G shot putt, to place her seventh, also with a PB.
As Oakley and Wakefield already held the club age group records in their respective events, these two results saw them both re-write the relevant pages.
There was disappointment for Liam Clare in the U15B 80m hurdles as he picked up an injury going over the first barrier and limped home in a time far below his potential.
Jay Liczbinski suffered a similar fate in the same event, injuring his knee about half way along the course. However he’d had a more satisfying day in the high jump, despite managing a little below his best, recording 1m 52.
