King's Lynn Town suffer National League thumping at Boreham Wood

King’s Lynn Town scored their first goal in more than 300 minutes yesterday – but they were on the receiving end of a 5-1 thumping by Boreham Wood as they suffered their sixth defeat in eight games.

Lynn’s defensive frailties were cruelly exposed after the break at Meadow Park as Kabongo Tshimanga helped himself to a second half hat-trick.

Michael Gash’s early opener for Ian Culverhouse’s side was cancelled out by Gus Mafuta as both sides ended long goal droughts in the opening six minutes of Monday’s clash.

But it was the Tshimanga show after the interval as Lynn were blown away in convincing fashion.

Lynn made one change to their starting line-up for their first-ever visit to Meadow Park.

After missing two matches due to FA Youth Cup duties with Ipswich Town, defender Elkan Baggott returned to the team at the expense of midfielder Ethan Coleman.

Lynn got off to an ideal start by taking the lead in the fourth minute through Michael Gash who curled the ball home after some delightful footwork.

But their joy was short-lived after the hosts equalised two minutes later with a cracking long-range effort from Gus Mafuta who was on target with The Wood’s first goal in five games.

Some excellent goalkeeping from Nathan Ashmore midway through the first half denied Lynn from regaining the lead after a delightful pass Alex Kiwomya had sent Michael Gyasi clear.

The hosts were enforced into an early change when goalscorer Mafuta was forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring problem four minutes before the interval.

Four minutes into the second half Tyrone Marsh rattled the Lynn crossbar with a stunning dipping effort from 30 yards.

It was a stark warning for Lynn, who sorely missed Coleman’s contribution in the middle of the park, and four minutes later The Wood took the lead after Tshimanga netted from an acute angle for his 18th goal of the campaign.

The dangerous Tshimanga made sure there was to to be no comeback from Lynn with the simpliest of finishes with the visiting defence all at sea.

Kane Smith added a fourth for Boreham Wood at the midway point of the second half as Lynn’s defence was breached for the 80th time this season before Tshimanga completed the misery 17 minutes from time.
