King’s Lynn Stars rider Robert Lambert suffered Grand Final heartache at the British Under-21 Championships for a second year running.

As he did at Coventry in 2015, Lambert cruised to victory in all five of his programmed rides before being forced to settle for silver medal in the final deciding heat.

It was disappointment again for the 18-year-old who will return to the Roger Warnes Transport Stars’ line-up for Thursday’s home meeting against Leicester.

Stebbings Car Superstore Young Stars team member Nathan Greaves, who won Heat 12, put in an encouraging display to reach the semi-finals while Josh Bailey endured a tough night at Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium.

Final: 1 Josh Bates, 2 Robert Lambert, 3 Adam Ellis, 4 Jack Parkinson-Blackburn.

Qualifying scores: Robert Lambert 15, Adam Ellis 13, Josh Bates 11, Jack Parkinson-Blackburn 11, Max Clegg 11, Nathan Greaves 9, Zac Wajtknecht 9, Oliver Greenwood 8, James Shanes 7, Jack Smith 6, Danyon Hume 5, Danny Phillips 4, Ellis Perks 4, Josh Bailey 3, Danno Verge 2, Alfie Bowtell 1, Liam Carr 1 (reserve), Ben Basford 0 (reserve).
