The curse of the West Norfolk Minis Festival was broken and the rain and mud were nowhere to be seen on a clear day at Gatehouse Lane.

Buoyant souls, children and adults alike joyed in with the spirit of rugby to attend the first festival in the children’s rugby calendar.

A morning of drizzle cleared up to reveal a beautiful day on the Sunday; preparations were completed for teams from all over Norfolk and Lincolnshire to descend on Gatehouse Lane on the Sunday morning.

With 51 teams attending and more than 1,000 children, parents and supporters involved, the club was bursting with cakes, sweets, hot dogs and most importantly hot drinks.

Strong hands through the age groups from under-7s to under-12s grasped the oval balls and hugged them to make a break for the line.

Slippery tags to crunching tackles were as to be expected but tunnels of umbrellas and gazebos added a variety of colours not usually seen to the different team kits.

Each age demonstrated the core values of rugby, from teamwork to respect of each other and the officials, to compete in the sunny conditions.

This was sportsmanship from the returning of a tag to a helping hand from a tackle to enjoyment easily seen by the eagerness to return to the pitch.

Comments from players and parents alike hailed the festival a huge success.

Graham Woodcock, chair of West Norfolk Rugby Club, said: “It was a massive weekend for rugby at West Norfolk.

“Our youth and mini section, with a fantastic band of volunteers, once again fulfilled our well-deserved reputation for organisation and friendliness in our mini rugby festival.

“Well done to each and every one of them and to all those teams who were represented.”

The club is raising funds for a lift to make the club house accessible to all. Funds raised from car parking, cake sales and the barbecue topped £2,000 towards this.
