King's Lynn Stars looking forward to renewing acquaintances with former boss
King’s Lynn Stars personnel say they have an additional reason to look forward to an A47 speedway derby this year.
This is because former Stars boss Rob Lyon, arguably Lynn’s most successful team manager, now performs that role at Peterborough.
Not all Minors & Brady Stars supporters may be aware of this, but former Great Britain manager Lyon joined Lynn’s Premiership rivals the Panthers last winter.
Lynn enjoyed trophy-laden times which were really kick-started by a treble in 2006 in the second tier Premier League under Lyon, who almost guided them to a top-flight title in 2014.
Skipper Lewis Kerr said: “I was aware Rob had gone there. It’s a bit strange I suppose but Rob is a good manager and Peterborough is not far for him to go.”
Dersingham-based Kerr has plenty to be grateful for as his first full senior season at Saddlebow coincided with Lyon’s tenure.
Former Young Stars rider Kerr added: “He was my first manager when I first went up to the seniors in 2014 and he was very good to me.
“I got on really well with him and he was always up for a good laugh and mickey-taking which is what you want.
“But on the other hand, he certainly liked to get the job done. He was great for me, especially in that first year.
“Rob would come over to you and could tell you what needed to be done in a nice kind of way, but you know he means it, if you see what I mean? For sure he’s a very passionate guy.”
Stars team boss Peter Schroeck said of his time as former Rye House Rockets manager Schroeck said: “When I was at Rye House I had more to do with Dale (Allitt) when he was Lynn team manager, to be honest.
“I didn’t have much to do with Rob, but we would chat and so on.
“It will be quite interesting when the two sides clash, that will be good for the local derbies.
"Rob will want to come to King’s Lynn and cause a bit of trouble; and vice versa when we go over there. I’ll look forward to it.”
Lyon’s move to Peterborough went mainly under the radar at the beginning of 2020 due to coronavirus dominating headlines and ultimately leading to that year’s league programme being cancelled.
