West Norfolk karting ace makes successful start in new class at Whilton Mill

West Norfolk Kart racer Jenson Sayell got off to a successful start in his new class at Whilton Mill in Northamptonshire.

The 10-year-old Marshland St James race ace finished second in his Minimax 950 in the first round of the Cadet Kart Championship.

The first heat of qualifying started in heavy rain and Sayell struggled for grip on slick tyres, spinning in the first corner to bring a sudden end to his race.

Heat two saw him up to second place on lap one and he finished third to earn an eighth-place grid slot for Sunday’s super heats.

In the first, he span while trying to get heat into the tyres on the formation lap and had to rejoin at the back of the field.

However, an excellent comeback drive saw him finish seventh.

A better start to the second heat saw him up to fifth at the end of lap one and fourth by the flag.

In the final, Sayell was fifth on the grid but was on a charge, making up places rapidly to hold second place by the seventh lap. He then held off all challenges to claim his first trophy in his new class.

His dad Rob said: “It was a challenging weekend, both mentally and physically with a few problems to overcome (including a big hit into the barrier in practice) but Jenson came out the champ he is with an amazing drive in the final to finish runner-up.

Sponsor Chris Phillips came along on Sunday and was impressed, saying: “Jenson drove well. He overcame some setbacks in the weekend and got a result in the final by using his head."

Sponsors JLK Vehicle Solutions and Chris Phillips have been joined by Emma Wright Professional Aesthetic Enhancements, Prestige Designs and Ark East Anglia in supporting Sayell’s karting journey.
