Like every football fan in the country, Linnets boss Tommy Widdrington was full of praise for the Lionesses after their historic 2-1 victory over Germany in the Women’s Euro 2022 final on Sunday.

He said: "The ladies have done fantastically well in their European Championship campaign and I’m delighted. I’m English, I’m delighted we’ve won.”

King’s Lynn Town, of course, can also boast a women’s team.

Widdrington said: “To the ladies who play for Lynn, at some stage I will get to see them. I’ve met the captain and the guys that run the outfit, but I will get to a game or two this season and support them.

"And I encourage everybody in the Lynn area to not only support the ladies but get out and support the men. Both teams will be trying hard to be successful for the town.”

Widdrington said he thought the England win would be good, not only for the women’s game but for football in general.

He said: “I think their motto during the whole of the campaign was very good.

“Football in general has suffered with crowds because of the Covid. That’s not just men’s football or women’s football or children. Every sport that needs attendance, certainly at the lower levels, Premier League is a little bit different, but as you go down the pyramid

“But the teams and the towns that have them teams, they need the support, we need the support.

“Hopefully, I’m a big believer if you win games people will come out to watch us. We intend to get off on the front foot.”
