Preparations are under way for a special banger racing meeting to remember a man who helped build Swaffham Raceway.

Sid Symonds, of Swaffham, passed away aged 78, after suffering a heart attack last month.

Mr Symonds had been banger racing for many years, both alone and with his son Dale, who died in 1987, aged just 19.

His race number was 02 and Mr Symonds was very well known at the Swaffham venue due to his dedication to the racing scene.

As well as helping build Swaffham Raceway, formerly known as the Swaffham Stadium back in the day, the father-of-six built banger cars on his driveway, at Pedlars Grove, and also competed on the track.

Mr Symonds also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Daughter Jodie said: "After my brother Dale died, my dads heart wasn't in it quite so much, but his last wish before he died was to go round the track and race again.

"Sam Watkins and my niece Tara Symonds put an appeal on Facebook to see if anyone would be prepared to turn his Peugeot 306, which he drove until the day he died, into a race car.

"James Ellis saw my post and has kindly offered to do up the car, while Swaffham Raceway owner Paul Fryatt has donated the paint and agreed to stage a meeting to remember him.

"The support from people has been extraordinary. We've received messages from so many people who we don't even know. We can't thank people enough for getting in touch."

Mr Ellis is rebuilding Mr Symonds' car to look like the General Lee from the Dukes Of Hazzard and it is hoped the vehicle will also include the dixie horn.

A date for the meeting to honour his memory is still to be confirmed due to the coronavirus, but once it has been given the green light Alex Hudson - a close family friend - will drive Mr Symonds' Peugeot 306.

"The banger racing scene is like one big family and the meeting will allow people to remember my dad forever," said Jodie.

"To know my dads memory will live on a little longer in the form of a banger car brings the family so much joy."

Mr Symonds' funeral will take place on Tuesday, June 16, at King's Lynn Crematorium.
