King’s Lynn player clinches glory at Eastern Masters Vets tournament
A West Norfolk table tennis player has moved a step closer to clinching a place in the top five rankings in the country for his age group.
Wayne Mason, from Gaywood, was triumphant at the Eastern Masters Vets table tennis tournament.
The event saw hundreds of players from across the country competing in several age categories from over 40s to over 70s at the UEA in Nowich for the two-day tournament.
Mason, who plays the sport locally for teams in both Norwich and Wisbech table tennis leagues won the men's over 40s competition.
His path to the final saw him beating Richard Jermyn (ninth seed) in the quarter-finals, Neil Charles in the semi-finals (second seed) and Rory Scott in the final (seventh seed) in some thrilling games.
Previously a junior champion, Mason, 42, has now progressed into the Vets category and this is his second season playing the masters veterans tournaments across the country.
This win will ensure Mason climbs the national rankings in the over-40s category where his aim is to be in the top five in the country.
