Youngsters claim several trophies at West Norfolk Junior Championships

The YMCA Badminton Club primary school group and high school teenage badminton club finished their seasons on a high, taking several trophies at the West Norfolk Junior Championships.

Many members attend the West Norfolk development squad sessions, and several are in the county squads.

The last night was a fun session where children played games like round robin, pirates, “Throwminton” and serving shuttles in hoops and tubes for prizes.

Following the fun games, the annual awards were handed out to the most deserving players during the season.

In the primary school group, a trophy was awarded to Lynn’s Emma Hutchinson, 9, for excellent attendance, attitude towards learning and enthusiasm.

In the teenage group, the most improved player over the season was Downham’s Ben Buckley, 14, for his improvement in standard over the season and for being accepted into the West Norfolk development squad.

Coach Janis Baker, assisted by Gemma Clarke, new level 1 coach Lucy Enfield plus St Clements High School student Hayden Lawrence, run the junior clubs throughout the season.

Baker extended her thanks to Gavin Holford who has helped her with the junior clubs for 20 years and has now stepped down.

Older juniors are encouraged to help out with the younger children at the earlier session, some having gone on to take coaching qualifications themselves.

The club runs every Tuesday at King Edward VII Academy from September to the end of April.

Baker then encourages some of the older, more experienced, juniors to stay onto the adult pay and play club that takes place straight after the junior sessions.

Again, this season, in addition to the senior ladies A team, Baker entered a ladies B team in the Ouse Valley Badminton League to give some of the teenage girls some competitive experience on court.

A girl’s C team also played in a friendly ladies league, with matches against Watlington, Docking and Lynnsport Monday ladies group.

The junior summer club started on Tuesday between 5 and 6pm at Alive Lynnsport.

To reserve a place, call Janis on 07796921218.

The main junior club starts back on Tuesday, September 10. See Janis Baker’s website for more details at: www.janisbaker.co.uk
