West Norfolk brothers are the big winners at county badminton event
Brothers, Charlie and Harry Wakefield, from West Norfolk Junior Badminton, were the big winners at the Norfolk under-18 county championships.
Charlie, 16, who is sponsored by Forza West Midlands, and Harry, 13, who is personally sponsored by Top Spin Tennis, played in the boys’ singles event, as well as Luc Widdowson, Leo Fonzo, Alfie Brown and William Jones.
Both brothers won their respective groups to go into the main knockout rounds, along with Widdowson, who was runner-up in his.
The remaining boys went into the plate competition, with Jones winning one round, but it was Fonzo and Brown who won through to face each other in the final, which the latter won by 21-17, 16-21, 21-16.
Back in the main knockout event, Widdowson was unlucky to draw top seed Charlie in the quarter-finals, with Charlie and Harry both winning their quarter and semi-finals to face each other in the final.
Despite Harry’s undoubted skills and deceptive shot making, the older brother’s strength and speed proved too much, with Charlie winning the title.
The Wakefields then paired up in the boys’ doubles, alongside Fonzo and Brown.
Widdowson played with Norwich’s Vikash Kumar and they were unlucky not to make the semis after losing 20- 21 in their group against the second seeds.
Fonzo and Brown only lost to the Wakefields to reach the semi-final which they lost in a close-fought match.
The brothers were unbeaten in their group and semi-final and won the title after defeating Louis and Aruneesh, from Norwich, 21-7, 21-6 in the final.
The mixed doubles event was split into two groups, with Charlie and partner Caitlin Parfitt winning theirs and Widdowson with Jasmine Hudson winning theirs after defeating the second seeds.
Charlie won his third title of the day after he and Caitlin defeated Widdowson and Hudson 15-6, 15-7 in the final.
West Norfolk Junior Badminton is sponsored by Roythorne’s Garage of North Wootton.
