West Norfolk teenager's success comes at gold event
Rising teenage badminton star Harry Wakefield, from West Norfolk Junior Badminton, won a silver medal at the under-15 Gold event in Hertfordshire.
Gold events are the top level Badminton England national tournaments.
Wakefield, 13, who is personally sponsored by Top Spin Tennis, played with his regular mixed partner, Chloe Dennis from Suffolk.
The pair, who are ranked three in England, were seeded two in the tournament, which had a large entry of 32 pairs from across the country.
The pair had a bye into the second round, which they comfortably won to reach the quarter-finals.
They won that match 21-13, 21-7 to play Asish Chitamuru from Yorkshire and Megan Tweed from Warwickshire in the last four.
This was the stage in their last tournament that Wakefield and Dennis fell short, but this time they were dominant over their opponents, winning by 21-14, 21-10.
They then faced the number one under-15 mixed pair in the country, Ethan Hosken and Leonna Lee from Bucks/Herts, in the final.
Wakefield and Dennis stayed with the higher-ranked pair throughout both games, giving the top seeds a real scare by pushing them to a 17-21, 17-21 scoreline.
West Norfolk Junior Badminton is sponsored by Roythorne’s Garage of North Wootton.
