Ladies deliver a passionate display on their travels
Bury Foxes 33
West Norfolk Ladies 10
West Norfolk Ladies gave league leaders Bury Foxes a fright with a performance full of passion on Sunday.
The Gatehouse Lane outfit startled their high-flying hosts with their improvement and determination, making the hosts work hard for every single point.
The ladies made the short trip determined to improve on their 59-0 loss from earlier in the season and knew that it was going to be a hard and tiring match where every tackle, pass and breakdown would be contested.
From the outset, West’s forwards moved strongly against the Foxes, determined that the game would not be dictated by Bury’s backs.
They applied constant pressure and were close to scoring before Bury stole the ball and scored on the wing. Bury converted the try from a difficult angle, earning praise and applause from the spectators and West’s coaches.
Zoe Sharp put West’s first points on the board by kicking the ball cleanly through the posts from a penalty awarded in the Foxes half.
Continuous hard driving work from the forwards was rewarded when Rosie Lingham went over the line to give West their only try.
Once again, Sharp added the additional two points to West’s tally with her conversion.
After the break, Libby Lockwood was unfortunate to see her try ruled out.
Confident field kicking by Kathryn Sharp, sponsored by the Mortgage Bureau, led to lineouts close to Bury’s try line where West captain Sarah Hodge, sponsored by DPH Construction, inspired conviction that any contest in the air would be won by the visitors.
Despite the loss, West were proud of what they achieved against a well-drilled side, putting pressure on from the start and battling to the end.
Back-of-the-match was Catherine Leach and forward-of-the-match was Claudia Langley.
West Norfolk Ladies’ next match is on Sunday, February 17, at home to Woodbridge Amazons.
