West Norfolk athlete Rebecca Johnson struck gold in the UK Sportshall Athletics National Finals, at Colchester, on Sunday.

Johnson was in outstanding form in the standing long jump event, leaping a huge 2.38 metres in the Under-13 girls event.

She backed her top spot off with a third-place finish as part of the 4x1 lap relay team.

Norfolk teams had cleaned up at the regional finals last month at the UEA and once again they really stepped up on the big stage at a competition which produces a vibrant atmosphere and a good level of excitement and enthusiasm.

West Norfolk had five youngsters selected to represent the county based on their performances through the rounds.

Under-13 girl Johnson and Mia Lesniak, Under-13 boys Charlie Broad and Finley Morby-Jones and Under-15 boy Thomas O’Neill.

Unfortunately, O’Neill had to withdraw due to an injury he picked up the week before.

Mia Lesniak was seventh in the Under-13 girls shot competition with her marvellous final put of 7.27m in the fourth round.

Charlie Broad had a fantastic 4th place in the U13 boys Shot, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal by just 5cm.

His furthest effort of 8.34cm came in the last round.

Teammate Finley Morby-Jones finished just behind Charlie in 5th position with 7.72m effort in round 2. Broad was also part of the 3rd place 4x1 lap relay team.

All four of the West Norfolk athletes finished the day with medals as the Under-13 boys team were crowned national champions whilst the Under-13 girls finished second as national runners up.

In the other age categories, the Under-15 girls won the national title.

The Under-15 boys finished just outside the medals in fourth place with some valiant individual performances.

The finals closed the book on Sportshall athletics for another season and shows yet again that grass roots athletics is going strong with some impressive performances by young athlete.

These athletes will go forward to the outdoor season at club and county level and look to build on all they have achieved.

It is so good once again to see representatives from West Norfolk earning selection.

Thanks, as always, must go to the organisers, officials, athletes, parents and volunteers who make all these events possible.

If you are interested in joining in as a volunteer, becoming an official or as an athlete from ages 8-88+, take a look at the West Norfolk website for further details at: https://westnorfolkac.co.uk/index.php/about-the-club/
