West Norfolk Swimming Club hit the ground running on the opening weekend of the annual Norfolk County Championships on Saturday and Sunday.

The first of three consecutive weekends of competition saw the long-distance 800 and 1500 metre freestyle events contested at UEA SportsPark in Norwich.

The 800 metre events saw gold medals for Nathan Wells (men’s senior title) and Nedas Tkacenko (boys 16 years), silver medals for Esmie Kidman (girls 16 years) and Elyn Lauder (girls 15 years) and a bronze for Leah Wightman (girls 17+ years).

Also competing for West Norfolk across the distance were Tom James (4th boys 14 years), Nathan Yeaman (4th boys 15 years), Thomas Garnett (5th boys 15 years), Harvey Isle (5th boys 17+ years), Wiktoria Marcinek (5th girls 14 years) and Robert Addis (8th boys 17+ years).

In the boys' 1500 metres, Tkacenko and James both took gold in their respective age categories, whilst Yeaman brought home a silver.

Kidman was the sole representative in the girls' 1500 metres and more than lived up to the pressure – swimming fast enough to not only take victory in the 16 years age category, but to take the women’s senior title as well.

The final two weekends of the championship take place over February 5 and February 12 when swimmers will be hoping to add to their medal haul.
