West Norfolk driver fails to pick up any points after disappointing night at Adrian Flux Arena
“If I didn’t have bad luck, I wouldn’t have any luck,” is how a rueful Willie Skoyles junior assessed last Saturday in the BriSCA F1 stock cars, where he failed to pick up any points after a disappointing night.
With it being a World Championship qualifying round it dealt a big blow to Skoyles’ hopes of qualifying for a World semi-final this year.
There were plenty of positives for Skoyles to take from the night, though, as he was showing good speed and he was living with the rest of the sport’s star grade drivers when he was in full flight around the track.
Things were looking good in his heat until Lincoln’s Paul Hopkins climbed all over his bonnet and saw his car cut out – it ended up being worse for Hopkins, though, who rolled his car over.
“I thought that incident was going to be the end of my night as I thought it ripped the carb off the engine but fortunately it was an electrical issue which we were able to solve and get back out,” said Skoyles.
In the consolation final, Skoyles progressed though and had just caught the main field when he clipped the fence which dislodged a wire in the electrics.
Things went from bad to worse in the Grand National, which lasted all of a quarter of a lap when he got spun round and hit in his front wheel, which snapped off the kingpin and the shocker.
“I’m glad to be finding more pace and feeling more confident every meeting but I just need some luck," admitted Skoyles.
“I am down to blue for the next meeting so will see what that brings.
“I would like to thank all those that helped me on Saturday to get the car back out – we will get there.”
There wasn’t much luck for local drivers in the 2L stock car English Championship with Lee Sampson being the best local finisher in 11th place.
Deane Mayes was crowned champion on the night with a great drive.
Racing returns to Lynn on Bank Holiday Monday (1pm) when the two-litre bangers, 1500cc bangers, Reliant Robins and a ramp rollover competition take place.
A big local entry sees Ashley Garrod, Wes Freestone, Kieran Bowman, Matt Penver, Kieran Woods, Ady Gibbs, Robert Betts, Chris Horton, Luke Allen and Shaun, Ross and Jon Cooper in action.
The Predators, in particular, are fielding a big entry with this being the annual Michael 'Bandit' Bailey Memorial which remembers one of their former team mates.
Ashley Garrod will be having a busy day as he races the 1500cc bangers as well as the two-litre bangers while joining him in the 1500cc bangers will be both Ryley Freestone and Paul Lovick.
Freestone will also be attempting the ramp rollover, along with Dersingham’s Sam Coote.
