Review: Dreamgirls, Theatre Royal Norwich
What an astonishing show with three terrific actors performing at the very top of their game.
This is a big production number, with a live orchestra, glorious costumes and a large, hard working cast who don’t let the pace drop for even a second.
The show, direct from the West End, is very loosely based on the story of The Supremes, who reigned supreme in the 1960s. It tells of Effie (Nicole Raquel Dennis), Deena (Natalie Kassanga) and Lorrell (Paige Peddle), the Dreamgirls, who became superstars, paving the way for black women to succeed in the music business.
It tells of their highs and lows, the friendships formed and lost, and the power music - Soul, Motown and R&B - has to inspire and empower. Look out for hit songs like One Night Only,
Listen, and Cadillac Car, while the stand out moment came from Nicole Raquel Dennis who many of us remember from her appearance on the TV show, The Voice, and her duet with Jennifer Hudson - who was in the 2006 movie of Dreamgirls! Her version of And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going at the end of the first act had us all on our feet.
If you like your musicals fast, furious and with a very big heart, this is unmissable. Grab a ticket if you can. The show continues until June 11.
