Review of 2:22 A Ghost Story at Norwich’s Theatre Royal: Amazing set, intriguing storyline and stellar cast make show a must-see

2:22 A Ghost Story – Theatre Royal, Norwich

Do you believe in ghosts? That’s the question at the core of 2:22 A Ghost Story, and the main point of tension between couple Jenny (played by former EastEnders star Louisa Lytton) and Sam (It’s a Sin’s Nathaniel Curtis).

What should be an exciting time for the new parents – who have recently moved into a doer-upper of a home – turns dark as while Sam was away on a trip, Jenny was disturbed by a presence in the home every night at exactly 2.22am.

Jenny heard footsteps on the baby monitor one night and another a man crying – so when Sam returns from his trip, and the pair invite fellow couple Ben (Joe Absolom) and Lauren (Charlene Boyd) over for a dinner party, Jenny convinces them all to stay up until 2.22am to bear witness to the strange events.

The show has been taking the West End by storm since it premiered in 2021 and has since that time had star-studded casts including Lily Allen, Tom Felton and Cheryl.

And the production currently touring the UK also enjoys a brilliant cast – each one believable as their character – with Lytton a particular stand-out as she attempts to get her sceptical husband to see the situation from her point of view.

The show also benefits from a fantastic set, which creates the visual eeriness you would expect from ghost storytelling.

There were also plenty of humourous moments which provided welcome light relief from the tension throughout.

Although an extremely fast-paced and gripping watch, it was not as terrifying as I had mentally prepared for, which was somehow simultaneously a relief and ever so slightly anti-climactic.

The concept of 2:22 is not an entirely new one but with an amazing set, an intriguing storyline and a stellar cast, it's not a show to be missed.

It continues at Norwich Theatre Royal until Saturday. For more information, visit norwichtheatre.org
