Tonight will see The Play’s The Thing Theatre Company present a double-bill of two new one-act plays under the title Hidden Stories.
These two plays, being performed at Westacre Theatre, 7.30pm, look at the hidden stories of two women who were tried and executed for murder.
Now You See Me , written by Carly Halse and Darlint Peidi, by Rosemary Hill, uncover two cases which are now seen as major miscarriages of justice, raising the question about the treatment of men and women and its hypocrisy.
The Play’s The Thing Theatre Company brings to life these incredible true tales of the failure of the justice system and intrigue, perfect for those with a passion for true crime.
A spokesperson said: “We are often fed a certain narrative by the media which comes to be the one that everyone accepts, but there is always a great deal we don’t know.
The stories of Ruth Ellis and Edith Thompson hanged and executed for murder have been rewritten by two female playwrights to uncover the severe miscarriage of justice created by the English legal system.
“These two plays look at the hidden stories of two women who were tried and executed for murder.
“In the case of Edith Thompson, at the time there was a moral panic after the First World War.
“Edith Thompson was seen as immoral and calculating.
“A married woman who worked, didn’t keep house and took a much younger lover.
“Ruth Ellis was also seen as a sexual predator, a night club hostess who neglected her duties as a mother.
“The plays asks us to think about ingrained misogyny in the justice system. “Both cases are now seen as major miscarriages of justice, but are women still judged more harshly than men?”
