The Arts Society King’s Lynn welcoming Gavin Plumley for talk on Pieter Bruegel the Elder to start new season

An arts society in town is kicking off the new season with a talk.

The Arts Society King’s Lynn (TASKL) starts the 2024-2025 season on Thursday, September 12 when they welcome Gavin Plumley to speak about ‘Bruegel, the Seasons and the World’.

In 1565, Pieter Bruegel the Elder was commissioned to create a series of paintings for a dining room in Antwerp. The images, charting the course of a year, changed the way we view the world through art.

Looking at paintings such as The Return of the Herd, Hunters in the Snow, and The Gloomy Day, this lecture explores how Bruegel pioneered a whole new way of thinking about the environment and our individual places within a shifting cosmos.

Gavin Plumley is a writer and broadcaster, appearing on BBC Radio Three, and BBC Radio Four and contributing to newspapers, magazines, and opera and concert programmes worldwide.

The lecture, which will take place at West Winch Village Hall where there is ample free parking available, starts at 2pm.

TASKL meets once a month on the second Thursday from September to May and anyone is welcome to become a member.

The annual subscription is just £55 or you can go along to individual talks as a guest for £10.
