Doin Different: New ballads from the East of England – Gareth Calway
Following its official launch at Lynn’s Hanse House, it is now on sale at Hanse House, True’s Yard, the Custom House, Waterstones or via Poppyland Publishing.
This is his eighth book of verse, but it doesn’t just contain the words. It’s illustrated with photographs of musical events, locations around East Anglia and with full music scores and chord settings for the ballads.
If you’re a singer, a player or just enjoy listening to the music provided at the folk clubs and festivals across East Anglia, this one’s for you.
There are 39 ballads going back through the centuries and taking in such luminaries at Boudica, Margery Kempe, Anne Boleyn, Fanny Burney, Cromwell, Walpole, King John, Elizabeth Fry and Edith Cavell, with Lynn and West Norfolk well represented. And, to put you in a festive mood, there’s even “A Lynn Carol”.
In his introduction, Calway writes: “This book came about as a result of my love of the ballad form, the rich history of this region and music.
“The ballads began life as poems that can be enjoyed on the page and read aloud.”
There is also a foreword by Lynn historian Dr Paul Richards.
Doin Different is published by Poppyland Publishing at £10.95; ISBN 9781909796225.
