That’s Entertainment: Andy Tyler discusses upcoming events in and around King’s Lynn, including panto, concerts and talks

In his weekly That’s Entertainment column, Andy Tyler looks at some exciting upcoming events...

As I write it’s certainly all happening both locally, nationally and internationally, but you’ll be pleased to learn, I assume, that I’ll just concentrate on the usual crop of quality local events past, present and future in the column this week!

I must praise the recent streaming of the Royal Opera’s production of Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffman, at Lynn’s Majestic Cinema.

Admittedly it was a long session, there were two intervals and interviews with some of the people involved in the production, but the whole presentation was engaging, with fine, memorable music and some glorious singing from the cast, headed by Juan Diego Florez as Hoffman.

Afterwards, I decided to compare the ROH production with the classic 1951 film of the opera starring Moira Shearer, Robert Helpmann and Robert Rounseville, conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

Different, but a stunning and dark interpretation of this masterpiece - recommended!

For ballet fans Swan Lake is being streamed by The Royal Ballet on February 27 and Romeo and Juliet on March 20. Many cinemas now present these productions. They are an excellent substitute for attending the productions live in London.

Staying at the cinema briefly, my current film recommendation of the week stars, Adrien Brody in The Brutalist, released officially today. Very well reviewed, the movie, which has been nominated for several awards, tells the story of a Hungarian architect who flees to America in the 1950s and how he finds life there and his struggle to fit in.

News of pantos coming our way has still not abated! I can report this spring an Easter-time version of The Wizard of Oz is being held at Lynn’s Alive Corn Exchange on Wednesday, April 9 at 2pm and 6pm. Tickets can be booked by contacting: 01553 764864.

Exciting news for music lovers. The Lynn Festival series of Coffee Concerts starts this year with a recital to be given by The De Beauvoir Piano Trio, on Friday, February 7, starting at 11am.

Trios by Mozart and Lili Boulanger will be played as well as Beethoven’s famous Archduke Trio. Lynn’s historic Town Hall is certainly an appropriate and atmospheric venue for this series of forthcoming recitals, and no doubt coffee and cakes will be available! More exciting musical news! Music in the Burnhams is presenting a World of Gilbert and Sullivan recital at Burnham Overy Village Hall, on Saturday, February 1.

This great entertainment will be presented by Peter Hewitt and Tim Hurst-Brown and will include Fine wine, finger food, songs and stories from the world of Gilbert and Sullivan. For more information, contact 07989 177079.

And so to literary matters. Another date for your diary is Wednesday, March 12 when members of the local book club will meet and discuss the non-fiction historical publication Femina by Janina Ramirez.

The book features the stories of influential women who lived in the Middle Ages, including, of great local interest, Margery Kempe, a resident of Lynn who was a Catholic mystic and is supposed to have written the first autobiography in the English language.

Members of the club will meet and discuss the book from 5pm. New members are always welcome, and the venue is The Stuart House Hotel, Goodwin’s Road, Lynn.

I can now give details of the first two True’s Talks to be given on February 6 and 13 at True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum.

On February 6, Peter Gunn talks about Aviation Landmarks Norfolk and Suffolk and on February 13, Liz James talks about Life with St Margaret’s Monks: Our Benedictine Priory Beside the Minster. The talks start at 1pm, admission free but a donation is welcomed and booking is necessary. Call 01553 770479 to book.

Do visit westacretheatre.com to see what’s coming up at this famous local theatre. Besides live theatre, and creative workshops, there’s streaming from The National Theatre and much more fine entertainment to enjoy.

Lastly, don’t forget to take a look at what’s going on at your local library, hall, church or cinema, there’s lots to choose from, I assure you!
