Review of Shrek The Musical at Theatre Royal, Norwich: Beautiful songs, energetic dancing and impressive quick changes in fairytale show
Shrek The Musical - Theatre Royal, Norwich
Transport yourself to Far Far Away Land where you’ll meet a whole cast of fairytale characters from White Rabbit to Pinocchio, from an Ogre to a wannabe Prince (in sequin shorts) to a disco dancing Donkey.
Yes, Shrek the Musical is in town and it’s great fun. As much panto as musical, it follows the hit movie’s plot, with the supposedly scary Ogre (Anthony Lawrence) rescuing a feisty Princess Fiona, played on the opening night by Imogen Bailey with leading lady and Strictly favourite Joanne Clifton returning for the rest of the week.
Brandon Lee Sears has a powerhouse of a voice and excels as the street-smart Donkey, James Gillan plays a suitably mixed-up Lord Farquaad and look out for the dragon and the great puppetry skills displayed.
This production has beautiful songs, especially duets, energetic dancing and great costumes and make-up, including some impressively quick changes.
There is a happy ever after but not a traditional one, rather this anti-fairytale is all about beauty being on the inside and, while love does conquer all, there’s a stern message about accepting people’s differences.
Children of all ages will love the show and it is such an Easter treat!
The show continues until Saturday. Visit www.theatrenorwich.org
