Festival of Archaeology returns to National Trust venues this summer including Oxburgh Estate
The National Trust invites visitors to get hands-on with history as it joins the Festival of Archaeology.
From guided walks and talks with experts, to family-friendly workshops with finds handling and mini-excavations, a whole range of events will help visitors find out more about archaeology and the past hidden beneath the places in the charity’s care.
As part of this event, venues are opening their doors for visitors, including Oxburgh Estate.
Archaeological investigations over the last few years have revealed evidence of Roman and medieval settlements at Oxburgh Estate.
Visitors will be able to join a ‘turning back the clock’ tour on July 12, August 9, September 13 and, October 11, led by knowledgeable volunteers, and delve into the past to discover how the parkland landscape has changed over the millennia, with the opportunity to handle some of the historic finds.
Hosted by the Council for British Archaeology and supported by the National Trust, the festival is the UK’s biggest annual celebration of archaeology. This year’s theme is archaeology and wellbeing.
Angus Wainwright, National Trust archaeologist, said: “The festival is a brilliant opportunity for people of all ages to get involved in archaeology.
“The landscapes and historic places we care for are full of remarkable hidden stories, and it’s great to be able to bring the past to life and share these discoveries with visitors”.
