King's Lynn columnist Andy Tyler shares arts and showbiz events happening in That's Entertainment 17-23 March

By Andy Tyler

With plenty of great entertainment and events to report on, as usual, it’s a shame I have to start, unfortunately, with some sad news.

It was announced at the recent 34th King’s Lynn Fiction Festival that this year would probably be the last to be held, and likewise the Poetry Festival taking place this autumn.

Let’s hope somehow a means to enable these festivals to continue is found. In the meantime, thanks to founder Tony Ellis and all involved in making this prestigious festival such a success.

It’s always well worth seeing what’s being presented at the King’s Lynn Community Cinema Club.

A social event is being held on the evening of Thursday, March 30. Local film expert Nigel Herwin will give a talk on dance in films, post 1950.

The event starts at 7.30pm and will be held at the newly refurbished Nightingale Bar at the Ferry Lane Social Club. www.klccc.uk

For music lovers, and those wanting to explore fine classical music why not attend the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra’s next concert, taking place this Sunday at Alive Corn Exchange, Lynn?

The concert is entitled Northern Lights and the programme includes music by Nielsen, Johannsson, Grieg and Sibelius.

It’s the chance to take a fine musical Scandinavian journey and free tickets for young concert goers may still be available.

This week I recommend as my book of the week a biography of the underrated novelist and writer, Jean Rhys. Rhys, is best known these days for her most popular book Wide Sargasso Sea of 1966, and to learn all about her, consult Miranda Seymour’s biography I Used to Live Here, Once The Haunted Life of Jean Rhys. Miranda was one of the authors taking part in the recent Lynn Fiction Festival; the biography is published by William Collins.

There are just two coffee concerts left to enjoy in the current series organised by the King’s Lynn Festival. Today at 11am the Yehudi Menuhin School Ensemble play music by Haydn, Schumann and Beethoven and on Friday, April 28, also starting at 11am, pianist Noah Zhou will play music by Beethoven and Mussorgsky. Lynn Town Hall is the venue and doors open for coffee and a cake from 10.30am.

We could all do with cheering up so don’t forget Comedy Clubs are regularly held at Alive Corn Exchange. The next is held Thursday, March 23.

If you are a Beatles fan (I certainly am!), the Mersey Beatles, is presented on Sunday, March 26.

It’s a celebration of that most famous group. Quality entertainment is always on offer at the Exchange!

If 70s disco is your passion, the Princess Theatre at Hunstanton is holding a mega disco night entitled Lost In Music. Friday, March 24, is the date for your diary, the gig starts at 7.30pm. Visit the theatre’s website for details.

Keep an eye out for live streamed opera and theatre.

There’s many professional shows being presented as well. Your local cinema will often stream such exciting entertainment.

Lastly, congratulations to Lindsey Bavin for being awarded Employee of the Year for her tireless work in creating superb exhibitions at True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum.

Her award was sponsored by MARS and was part of the Mayor’s Business Awards. Trues’s Yard is always well worth a visit, of course!
