King’s Lynn Museum holds afternoon talks to explore hoards of treasure found in West Norfolk
On the last Friday of each month, and starting today, April 28, Lynn Museum will be hosting a series of in-person talks inspired by the museum’s current headline exhibition Hoards Archaeological Treasures from West Norfolk.
Today, the Norfolk Museums Service’s resident Numismatist Adrian Marsden will be discussing the Dersingham Hoard, a collection of 129 silver shillings in a silver cup which dates to the English Civil War and is thought to have been hidden for safekeeping during this turbulent period of history.
Then, on Friday, May 26, guest speaker Helen Geake, finds liaison officer, will be exploring how the Sutton Hoo Mound 1 burial revolutionised views of early Anglo-Saxon art and culture, and what can be learned from subsequent finds of goldwork in the decades since.
Finally, on Friday, June, 30 Adrian Marsden will return to discuss the incredible discoveries that make up the current exhibition at Lynn Museum.
From Bronze Age weaponry hoards to 2,000-year-old gold coins buried in a cow bone, discover more about the theories behind these spectacular discoveries.
Monika Saganowska, museum learning assistant said: “The Hoards exhibition has been a great hit with visitors since it opened in October last year, and we are excited to present the opportunity for visitors to dive deeper into some of the most spectacular archaeology from the local area.”
All talks will begin promptly at 2pm and last approximately one hour.
Tickets are £2 per talk, or free for Norfolk Museums Passholders.
Admission to the museum is included in the ticket price and seating is limited, so booking is recommended by contacting the museum or booking online via norfolk-museums.arttickets.org.uk/lynn-museum
