Festival aimed at supporting independent musicians to be held in Wormegay in September

A new festival aimed at supporting local musicians and showcasing their talents is coming to West Norfolk next month.

Wormegay Grass Roots Music Festival was the brainchild of Nathaniel Daw, who hosts open mic nights in Lynn with his business Midnight Disco.

Nathaniel, 34, who has been running the business for around nine months, has arranged for the festival to take place on Saturday, September 7 at Norfolk Garden Weddings’ Glenkindle venue on Stoke Road in Wormegay.

“The idea came from running local music nights and discussing it with other local musicians who don’t have a lot of opportunities to get gigs in the area,” he said.

“You have to have a proven record of performing live and if they don’t have the experience, it makes it harder.”

Among those playing at the festival will be Slava B, Retro Firefly, Raptya, Jamie Addison, DJ Neonate, Lucy West, Joe Reed, Ready Amy Fire and Alex B.

The musicians will be performing in slots of 45 minutes to an hour throughout the day - which runs between midday and midnight.

“That will offer them more chances to go forward and say ‘I have got the experience, I performed at this event’,” Nathaniel said.

He described it as a “more structured event” compared to the open mic nights.

“That’s the idea of the festival - to support local independent and upcoming musicians,” he said.

“They are all really glad and happy that it’s happening. It’s an opportunity they might not have got anywhere else.”

The event will also feature competitions, stalls, games, food, a bar and more.

Tickets can be purchased online ahead of the festival, at a cost of £10 per adult and £8.50 per child. Tickets purchased at the gate will cost £12.50 per adult and £10.50 per child.

Parking is included.
