‘King’s Lynn Festival just one of the things I’m looking forward to’
In his weekly ‘That’s Entertainment’ column, Andy Tyler takes a look at the West Norfolk arts scene…
I hope dodging the recent batch of inconvenient and frequent showers has not prevented readers from attending the wide range of events being presented locally; better weather is on the way, I’m sure.
Unfortunately bad weather did postpone the bike ride planned by Hansa England from King’s Lynn’s Minster Church to Walsingham, via Castle Rising and Sandringham last weekend,. A new date is to be fixed in the near future.
Last week I mentioned the publication of The BBC Proms complete concert programme for its forthcoming season, also out now is The King’s Lynn Festival brochure detailing all events being held in its season between July 14 and 27. Details are also available on pages 32 and 33 of today’s Lynn News and on-line by visiting: www.kingslynnfestival.org.uk
I’ve already mentioned some of the concerts and recitals to be held at the coming festival but today I highlight a concert including music by the distinguished composer James MacMillan; the event includes a Question and Answer session between the Festival’s artistic director Ambrose Miller and the composer, and following the concert there will be an opportunity for members of the audience to meet the composer over a complementary glass of wine. The first class performers are The Contemporary Consort and the recital begins at 6pm on Monday, July 22, the venue being Lynn Town Hall.
More exciting music! The Victoria String Quartet with Leon Bosch, double bass and Peter Hewitt, piano will give a concert at Burnham Overy Staithe Village Hall on Saturday, May 11, starting at 7:30pm. The programme includes an arrangement of Beethoven’s fifth piano concerto. Under 18s go free to the concert, and tickets are £20. To book on-line go to musicintheburnhams.com or ring 07989 177079.
The always informative King’s Lynn Civic Society Annual Report 2023/2024 dropped through my letter box recently. Details of the Society’s activities, events and local concerns and issues are included. The Society’s AGM is to be held on the evening of Thursday, May 23, starting at 7.30pm. It’s taking place at Thoresby College, South Quay, Lynn. Why not join the Society? New members are always welcome, the membership secretary is Sandra Coleman, email address: secoleman@btinternet.com
There are two Pleasant Sunday Afternoon Talks left in the current season, held at Marriott’s Warehouse Trust. This coming Sunday Marsha Parker talks on ‘King’s Lynn Jewish Cemetery and who may be buried there’ and on Sunday, May 19, Jill Bennett’s subject will be ‘Vaughan Williams in King’s Lynn’. The talks commence at 3pm on the second floor of Marriott’s Warehouse. Entry is free, but donations are welcome. Booking is not required.
Another suggestion for an enjoyable day out; this week I recommend a ride on The Poppy Line between Sheringham and Holt. The North Norfolk Railway runs through some beautiful countryside and sensational coastal scenery, so to find out more visit:www.nnrailway.co.uk, or phone:01263 820800.
For lovers of a good romantic novel I recommend this week David Nicholl’s new romance: You Are Here, and in the same breath I can recommend as my film of the week, the adaptation of his bestseller: One Day. A TV adaptation is available on Netflix for a limited period.
There’s still a couple of days left to view the ‘Intertidal Zone’ exhibition of oil paintings by Lorraine Bewick at Lynn’s Custom House in the Greyfriars Art Space. The exhibition is open between 10am and 4pm, and is open until Saturday.
Lastly, two more exciting local events to enjoy this weekend. There’s the Stradsett Park Vintage Rally, held this Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and also over the same days between 10am and 6pm, The Sandringham Food, Craft and Wood Festival held at The Sandringham Estate. Let’s hope the sun shines.
