That’s Entertainment: Andy Tyler discusses upcoming events in and around King’s Lynn, including Festival Too, concert, and opera and ballet screenings

In his weekly That’s Entertainment column, Andy Tyler looks at some exciting upcoming events…

I start the column this week on a serious note, wishing the gentleman who suffered a serious accident at the recent Hanse Watersports Festival all the very best for a sustained recovery.

There are many exciting events taking place in Lynn this summer, and we hope all will enjoy the entertainment safely.

Festival Too has now started, complete with a dazzling fireworks display. Tonight: Dead Horse, After Drive, Ska Souls and Rick Parfitt Jnr. Band feature and tomorrow Boogaloo (Springwood), Sonia, Wild Boys and Tony Hadley appear; Lynn’s Tuesday Market Place is the place to be - let’s hope for more glorious weather.

Following on from Festival Too the Lynn Festival gets off to a rousing start with a concert given by the world famous Black Dyke Band. Starting at 3pm on Sunday, July 13. The venue is Lynn’s Corn Exchange. For details of Festival events, pick up a physical brochure locally or visit: kingslynnfestival.org.uk or contact the box office to book tickets on: 01553 764864.

The festival is inviting local people to share their stories of life and work in Lynn which will become part of a sound collage and audio trail entitled ‘King’s Lynn Calling’. Festival visitors can then experience it on July 19.

The Lynn Festival Chorus will perform their concert featuring Orff’s exciting Carmina Burana at the Corn Exchange, and not as previously advertised in St.Nicholas’ Chapel. Start time is 4.30pm on Sunday, July 20.

I have been enjoying the TV Drama series The Gold, being shown on the BBC, based on events connected with the infamous Brink’s Matt Robbery in 1983.

The series stars Hugh Bonneville and the plot includes many unexpected clever twists and turns. The whole series is available to watch on the BBC iPlayer. As I have no movie recommendation this week , why not indulge in The Gold?

My book recommendation is the real story behind the robbery by Neil Forsyth and Thomas Turner, available in paperback, published by Penguin.

I was interested and very pleased to hear about the supportive and worthy organisation for the many people with vision impairment across Norfolk called Vision Norfolk, which has been operating for 220 years.

The organisation offers many services to people with sight loss. If you want to find out more about Vision Norfolk or make a donation do visit: visionnorfolk.org.uk or give them a call on: 01603 573000.

There will be more first class screenings of opera and ballet from The Royal Opera and Ballet at selected cinemas throughout the winter season.

Puccini’s classic opera Tosca will be first on October 1 and then on November 5 The Royal Ballet presents La Fille mal gardee. Details of future productions to follow.

Sheridan’s popular comedy The Rivals will be performed at Sedgeford Village Hall on the evening of Saturday, July 19, starting at 7.30pm.

With the current interest in late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century literature and drama it’s a good time to enjoy this Rain or Shine’s Theatre Company production. For information and tickets contact: 01485 570097.

Don’t forget The Hunstanton One-Act Drama Festival today, tomorrow and Sunday.

Also, keep an eye open for all the fine entertainment being held at Hunstanton’s Princess Theatre, you won’t be disappointed.

Lastly, for fans of organ music David Hill will give a Festival Organ Recital on Wednesday July 16, 4pm in St.Mary’s Church, South Wootton. Tickets are £12 including refreshments. Tickets can be purchased on the door or give 01553 674022 a ring.
