That’s Entertainment: Andy Tyler discusses upcoming events in and around King’s Lynn, including free tour of streets and pubs, theatre shows, and concerts

In his weekly That’s Entertainment column, Andy Tyler looks at some exciting upcoming events…

As a child, I can vividly remember being frightened by seeing a Cyclops, a one-eyed giant creature, appearing in the film ‘Jason and the Argonauts’, so I was fascinated with the recent illustrated lecture given by The King’s Lynn Civic Society’s chairman, Alison Gifford, entitled: Where Troy Once Was.

She discussed the origins of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey (the Cyclops Polyphemus appears in The Odyssey), and explained some intriguing theories she has regarding the locations of the stories described in Homer’s works. Lectures in the next few months feature Spalding and Audley End. Why not become a member of the society? Visit: kingslynncivicsociety.co.uk for further details.

Relatively more recent history now. A series of events commemorating the Scottish Fishing Fleet Disaster, where a great gale blew up off the Norfolk coast killing 37 Scottish fishermen, is being held during this 150-year anniversary period.

First up is a free tour, given by Dr.Paul Richards of The Streets of the North End:1875. Dr Richard’s tour will include entertaining tales of the streets and pubs of the North End and will give an insight into the everyday life of the North End fishing community.

There is no need to book, just meet 5pm at True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum, North Street, Lynn on Friday, October 17. The walk/tour will end at The Ferry Lane Social Club. Donations welcome, going for the Memorial Space in St.Monan’s. Details of other related events to follow.

Some fine concerts will be held at Lynn’s historic Town Hall on the weekend of Saturday, October 25, and Sunday, October 26. They are held in memoriam of Joan Marchbank and are given in aid of the Peddar’s Way Ward, the recently opened end-of-life suite at the QEH.

The Saturday concert begins at 7.30pm and features distinguished musicians Raphael Wallfisch, Cello, and Alan Schiller, piano, including music by Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, and the Sunday recital, starting at 3.30pm includes Schubert’s Trout Quintet and C major String Quintet.

The musicians are joined by the Bridge String Quartet and Marianne Schofield on the double bass. Tickets available by contacting 01553 764864, or via the Corn Exchange website.

And so to artistic matters. The GroundWork Gallery’s latest exhibition has now opened for viewing. It’s entitled: Fluid Earth and doors open Wednesday to Saturdays between 11am and 4pm. This exciting exhibition will close on December 13. Do pay the gallery a visit, it is at 17 Purfleet Street, Lynn, and for further details go to: www.groundworkgallery.com

Over in Swaffam an art exhibition will be held at The Assembly Rooms on October 25 and 26, opening times are 9am- 4pm and 10am till 4pm, respectively.

There will also be a preview evening on October 24 to be held between 6.30pm and 930pm. Organised by the Rotary organisation. If you are able, do go and view the colourful work!

Back to Lynn and a Dragon Festival is to be held on Saturday, November 8 from 10am. The Festival is a St George’s Guildhall event and will include exciting free activities such as archery, live theatre, hands-on- crafts and the chance to meet real dragons! Sounds scary, but fun! Visit: stgeorgesguildhall.com for more information.

For your quieter times why not relax with some amusing and newly published stories by the younger Virginia Woolf? Especially recommend for literary lovers and entitled: The Life of Violet published by Princeton. It is great to experience the work of a great novelist from her earlier years, published widely for the first time.

My film recommendation of the week should be at cinemas from today and is Tron: Ares. The film franchise started in 1982 and this latest episode describes the dangers of AI, a subject very much relevant today. Dramatic stuff!

Celebrating 40 years of compassionate care Tapping House is presenting Pot of Gold at All Saints Church, Hillington Square, Lynn tomorrow starting at 7.30pm with doors opening at 7pm. This song fest is given by Shanty Crew with special guest John Connolly. Tickets are £12 and under 16’s go free. Tickets only available by booking.

For the chance of listening to Black Sabbath’s 1970 Album: Paranoid, and to discuss afterwards over a hot drink why not turn up to Lynn Library at 5.30pm this coming Monday? Reel Connections organise this enjoyable free event.

Over at Hunstanton’s Princess Theatre there is plenty to enjoy. Tomorrow features the music of George Harrison, Sunday, Opera Boys and next Thursday, Showaddywaddy. What’s not to like!

Lastly, there is plenty to enjoy at Lynn’s Corn Exchange this weekend. That’ll be the Day’s 40th Anniversary Show is presented tomorrow evening from 7.30pm and there is Country Hits Live on Sunday evening also from 7:30pm. Enjoy!
